Silver Bluff High School was opened in the Fall of 1981 consolidating the communities of Beech Island, Jackson, Talatha, New Ellenton and Petticoat Junction. The facility is located on a 139 acre site in Petticoat Junction. The name Silver Bluff was chosen because of the proximity of the selected area to the historic Savannah River where DeSoto was reported to have landed. The Indians named the area Silver Bluff because of the particles of mica in the soil which gave the Bluff a silver appearance.
Silver Bluff presently serves 875 students with a personnel staff of 60. Jackson and New Ellenton Middle Schools function as the feeder schools for Silver Bluff. Greendale Elementary and Redcliffe Elementary are also members of the Area 5 Consolidated School District of AIken County.
The first Silver Bluff band had a total of 26 members not counting the band director who wore a uniform and marched with the band. Presently there are 160 students enrolled in the band program which consists of the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Winterguard Endurance and Silver Spirit.
